 Application for 2001 Taibunkyo Fund

The objective of Taibunkyo Fund (Training Abroad Fund of JCA) is to invite gifted and talented scholars and/or researchers from overseas to Japan by providing opportunities for research and study, and to promote cultural exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and other countries.

1. QUALIFICATION OF THE APPLICANTS AND CONDITIONS FOR ACCEPTANCE

1) The applicant must be a foreign nationality (citizen of the former USSR or East European countries) not residing in Japan. One person is to be accepted in 2001.
2) The applicant must be currently working as an able researcher, and must be able to work vigorously in his/her own country after the completion of the research by applying the knowledge and experience gained in Japan. The applicant must be between ages 30 and 50 at the time of application. (Date of birth: 1950,6,01 - 1971,5,31)
3) The applicant must receive an approval from the Japanese institution and/or co-researcher in advance.
4) The field of research is not restricted in particular.
5) The applicant must have sufficient language skills either in Japanese or in English to carry out the research.
6) Persons who had stayed or have been staying in Japan for a long time (over three months), an who plans to stay in Japan for a long period in the future cannot apply for this Fund.
7) The term of the research and stay in Japan is 10 months. The research must be started between September 1 and October 30, 2001.
8) The Fund will provide the following to the accepted researcher:
   (1) Monthly scholarship of 120,000 yen.
   (2) Economy class airline fare for a round trip to Japan.
   (3) Living costs (1 room with kitchen and bathroom as a rule, including gas, electricity, and the public utility charges).
   (4) Travel costs between the residence and the research institute (commuting ticket).
   (5) The Japanese national health insurance cost, and treatment cost for which the insurance is applicable.
The costs provided by the Fund above only applies to the researcher, and no assistance is to be provided for temporary visit of his/her family members.

2. PROCEDURE FOR APPLICATION
1) The dead line: The application must arrive at the Fund office by May 31, 2001.
2) The applicant must send the following documents to the Fund office.
  
(1) Application form using the provided form. Formularz znajduje się w dziekanacie Wydziału Geologii UW.
   (2) A letter of recommendation from the organization to which the applicant belongs (either in Japanese or in English, using the provided form).
   (3) A letter of recommendation by a co-researcher or adviser of the Japanese institution which plans to take on the applicant (in Japanese, using the provided form). This may be sent directly to the Fund office.
   (4) Personal history (written in any form, one in the applicant's native language and the other in English).
   (5) Five photographs taken within the last 6 months (4cm x 3cm).
   (6) A certificate from a medical institute which proves the applicant is in good health. (Any form is available.)

3. SELECTION OF THE APPLICANTS AND THE RESULT

1) The application forms will be reviewed by the members of the Selection Committee of the Fund,and selection will be done.
2) The accepted applicant will be notified by July 15, 2001.
3) The documents submitted will not be returned to the applicant.
4) The reason for the decision, and the process and the content of screening will not be informed or made public.

4. CANCELLATION OF THE ACCEPTANCE

In the event the written items on the application form are revealed to be false, or should the facts not satisfy the qualification for, or conditions of the application, the determination of invitation may be cancelled.

5. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE RESEARCHER TO TAIBUNKYO FUND

The researcher must submit a report to the Fund after the completion of the research.

Application instructions

* The deadline for this year's application is May 31, 2001 (arrival day).
* Applicatons must be submitted to "TAIBUNKYO Fund" (Training Abroad Fund) c/o Japan Cultural Association on the appropriate official forms.
* Application forms and personal history must be type-written. In case of Japanese clear handwriting in black ink is acceptable.

(5,6) Work place Address, Home Address: Both work place and home addresses should be given with indication of the preferred mailing address.
(7) Present employment Affiliation : The name of present affiliations should be given in English and in the native language.
(8) Higher Education: Begin with the most recent. Indicate degrees earned, dates, majors and names and addresses of the Institutions.
(9) Employment: Begin with the most recent. List all affiliations at which applicant has been employed, the positions held and the periods of employment. 
(11) Project Title:
Give the title of the project to be conducted in Japan if the Fund is granted.
(13) Affiliation, Adviser / Research Associate in Japan: The applicant himself must apply directly to the institution of intended affiliation for its approval. Give the name, address and telephone number of the Institution with which you intend to be affiliated and the name of your adviser.
(14) Recommenders: Give the names, positions and institutions of two individuals, one in the applicant's country and the other in Japan to whom you are sending the Reference Forms.
(17) English and Japanese Language Proficiency: Check the box corresponding to the level of your ability.

The project plan in Japan: Outline the plan and method of the proposed project in Japan.

Purpose and Significance of the Project: Describe clearly and specifically the circumstances leading to and motivations of the proposed research project, together with its aims and significance.

Reference Form: Please ask a recommender in the institution with which you are currently affiliated to fill out the form. The reference form for the Japanese recommender must be filled out by your adviser or co-researcher in Japan, and it can be forwarded by the applicant to the Fund Office in Tokyo, or directly by the recommender to the Office.
