10th anniversary High-alpine Research Station at the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern

Dear Madam or Sir,

in September 1989 we opened the High-Alpine Research Station at the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. Now, a little more than 10 years later we thought it is worth to present the unique opportunities of this research station once again.

The research station lies within Alpine pastures and the undisturbed wilderness of the biggest national park in Central Europe (1,788 km2). The localisation of the station directly next to the Grossglockner Mountain Road makes the station easily accessible even though it lies at the altitude of 2,273 m.

The station offers accommodation for up to 26 persons and has a modern working room and a laboratory with working places for up to 14 researchers. A seminar room and an exhibition about Alpine ecology (situated in the same building) makes the station also an ideal place for teaching and alpine field courses.

Universities from Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and from Austria have organised courses at this station. More than 50 scientific projects used the station as a base for field work resulting in 21 thesis (M.Sc., Ph.D.) and more than 70 publications.

The main focus of research so far has been the biodiversity, animal-plant-interactions in Alpine ecosystems, adaptations of Alpine specialists (studying animals and plants) as well as geologic, mineralogical and glaciological questions. The work at the research station has contributed significantly to the conservation of the diverse landscape and habitats of the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern.

The research station is open to all national and international researchers. A small contribution towards the expenses is charged for accommodation (50.- ATS = 3.63 EURO per night, reduced rate for students: 30.- ATS =2.18 EURO) - fixed rates for long running projects are negotiable.

We think that the High Alpine Research Station at the Nationalpark Hohe Tauem offers a unique opportunity to study the Alpine ecosystems and landscape processes and that it would be a valuable addition to your own research and teaching.
