Editorial

Archiwum Mineralogiczne (Mineralogical Archives) was initiated by S. J. Thugutt, professor of the Warsaw University. The first issue appeared in 1925 as one of the serial publications edited and published by the Warsaw Scientific Society. Fourteen issues were published up to 1938. The freshly ready for distribution volume XV did not appear because of the outbreak of war in 1939. Thanks to Professor Thugutt who recompiled under difficult post-war conditions the destroyed volume, it was reprinted in 1945. Two more subsequent volumes, XVI and XVII, appeared in 1946 and 1947, respectively, also edited by the Warsaw Scientific Society with Professor Thugutt as chief editor.

The XVIIIth volume appeared in 1954, after an interruption of several years, under the protection of the Polish Academy of Sciences, established in 1951, that created favourable conditions to the revival of the "Archives". A new editorial board was organized with Professor Thugutt as honorary editor and Professor K. Smulikowski as chief editor. Professor Smulikowski was head editor of the "Archives" - except the period 1965 - 1974 when he was replaced by Professor A. Polański - until his death in 1987. From the end of 1987, his duties in editing work were taken over by his disciples; the first of them, Kazimierz Szpila, was chief editor till 1995.

Since the volume XVIII, journal Archiwum Mineralogiczne has been published under the auspices of scientific committees of PAN (Polish Academy of Sciences), the Geological Committee (later Committee of Geological Sciences), and the Committee of Mineralogical Sciences, successively. The consecutive editorial boards and chief editors were making efforts for the journal to gain increasing approval, both at home and abroad.

Original papers have been published from the field of crystallography, mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry, initially as a rule in Polish, but ever with summaries in a Congress language, French especially. From the XVIIIth volume, full texts of papers dealing with more general problems of the mineralogical sciences have been more and more frequently published in English (rarely in another foreign language). Many issues in the past contained bibliographical notes. Scientific short notes and book reviews have been appearing since over 40 years; they became more frequent in the volumes of last 10 years. More frequent than before are recently also papers of foreign authors. In 1993, Archiwum Mineralogiczne hosted abstracts of the Twelfth Biennial Symposium European Current Research on Fluid Inclusions.

In order to facilitate the international circulation of the journal, the editorial board has decided to publish the papers only in English from volume 53 onward. We would believe that by the high quality of published papers the Mineralogical Archives soon join the European journals of international standard.
