The two gold coins issued privately in 1889 by Iuliu Popper, a
Romanian-Jewish gold prospector, and his company "Lavaderos
de Oro del Sud" in Argentinian part of the Isla Grande in
Tierra del Fuego. The coins were minted in Buenos Aires from the
alloy containing 86.4% Au, 13.2% Ag and 0.4% Cu. The value of
the coins was given by their weight, hence the inscriptions on
the coins: un gramo (1 gram) and 5 gramos. Gold
sand and the prospector's tools are depicted in the centres of
the coins. |
