strome i nagie wysokie części gór oraz połogie wzgórza u ich podnóży.

Landscape of the Apennine Mountains
in the area of the Province of Foggia, where sheep passage
long distances every spring and autumn (transumanza). The picture
presents steep summit parts of the mountains without vegetation and forested
foothills; the stamp block was issued in 2004.

The Transumanza
The word 'transumanza' means 'crossing the land' and derives
from 'trans' and 'mundus'
or 'earth'. In effect, that's exactly what it is - the passage of the
sheep twice a year from the high ground in the hills to winter pastures nearer
the coast and vice versa.
